Andy Beaudoin – The most unique gameplay element of the game comes in the form of Ash’s half sized, half dead, full attitude sidekick – Sam. Sam was a patient at the Asylum where the story kicks off, and was the unfortunate subject of some dark experiments involving the Necronomicon. As a result, he’s been changed into a deadite whose soul remains intact. He must team up with Ash to defeat the evil, and to get his revenge for the changes that were made to him. The catch is – Ash really isn’t too fond of him, and as such takes great pleasure in physically abusing him.
As a half dead sidekick Ash can kick around, Sam brings a ton to the gameplay table. And when I say Ash kicks him around – I mean he really kicks him around. Much of the gameplay involving Sam consists of Ash kicking him: onto enemies, into wood chippers, into furnaces, into explosives, etc.
In addition to being a useful weapon in combat and a tool for solving puzzles, Sam is a great vehicle for some really funny dialog. Bruce Campbell’s one liners as Ash are legendary. By sticking him with a loud mouthed counterpart, we were able to create a slew of really funny in-game dialog exchanges between the two. And for the voice of the sidekick, we were lucky enough to cast Ted Raimi – Sam Raimi’s brother. Ted and Bruce have worked together on a number of projects before and as such play off of each others style exceptionally well.
