Dat Sony grote moeite heeft om hun PlayStation 3 goed op de markt te zetten en een hoog aanbod te realiseren mogen wel duidelijk zijn. Het komt vooralsnog vooral door het gebrek aan Blu-Ray diodes voor de disc drive. In ieder geval gaat Sharp helpen bij de productie van deze diodes. Inmiddels zou het concern al bezig zijn met het leveren van de eerste diodes voor Sony. Of zij ook Europese componenten zullen gaan leveren is onbekend, vooralsnog gaat het dan ook vooral om het toevoegen van componenten voor Amerika en Japan.
Sharp Corp. has tossed its hat into the blue laser ring as the second supplier of the diode, following Nichia Corp. Sharp has already begun supplying the diodes to an undisclosed customer. Nichia and Sony Corp. are currently producing blue-violet lasers in volume under the cross licensing deal.
Sony’s capacity, however, is currently devoted to Playstation 3, meaning it won’t be offering the diodes to other companies at this time. The first priority is to secure enough diodes for PS3, said a Sony spokesman. Thus, Sharp’s capacity will serve the industry as the second source that supplements Nichia’s supply, which is estimated to be several hundred thousands units per month, to satisfy growing demand for the blue lasers.
