As I predicted months back, it’s finally come to light that Microsoft’s coveted XNA technology apparently does NOT make game development easier. It is, in fact, a major pain to use: Hij zegt dus in feite dat XNA moeilijk is in gebruik)
While we’re in rumour mode there have been mumblings coming from developers about the ease of use of the XNA development system which Microsoft has touted up as simple as pie and much more flexible than Sony’s system. Of course developers will always complain and the proof will be in the pudding we suspect, but it’s a niggle.
With developer-friendly OpenGL ES 2.0, Unreal Engine 3.0, AGEIA PhysX SDK, Cg, and ProDG it is abundantly clear that the Playstation 3 is indeed the most developer friendly system this generation.
Microsoft only has first-party, proprietary tools to offer, all of which are intended to lock developers into the Microsoft platforms. Good for Microsoft, bad for developers. I don’t see how any developer in their right mind would purposefully lock themselves into the Microsoft way of doing things, especially seeing how the tools are harder to use than Sony’s offerings.
Playstation 3 Specs *Not* Set
As if it couldn’t get any better, this little tidbit floats into our office this morning:
Sony revealed some impressive PS3 tech specs at E3, but they apparently weren’t set in stone. Developers have begun to tell us about actual improvements being made to the system’s specifications, including more system memory and other low-level upgrades that we won’t physically notice, but are making the people producing the games simply giddy.
1) Sony shows specs at E3 while Microsoft spooks take notes.
2) Microsoft returns to Redmond thinking the race is a “toss up” with the Playstation 3.
3) Two months later the rug is abruptly pulled out from under Microsoft as the PS3 specs are actually increased.
What could this mean? 1GB of system RAM? A hefty bump in speed for the RSX and/or Cell? I will let no stone sit unturned as I dig for answers, this I assure you.
To quote Bill Gates:
“Our view is basically we’ve got a Ferrari, they’ve got a Ferrari,” Gates said in a question-and-answer session at Thursday’s meeting with financial analysts. “Our Ferrari is leaving the starting line substantially before their Ferrari is, and in most races that’s a very nice thing.”
Well Mr. Gates, it looks like a certain Ken Kutaragi just stepped on the Nitrous Oxide pedal! I got a need for speed!!!
Xbox 360 to Get HD-DVD
…eventually. This week in Japan Bill Gates confirmed the Xbox 360 will include a HD-DVD drive sometime in the future.
According to the statements made by Bill Gates in Japan, Xbox 360, the new gaming console will include HD-DVD drives.
Considering that such a decision would postpone the launching date, Microsoft will equip the initial models with classic DVD drives, and only after the new HD-DVD are ready, the Xbox will incorporate them.
This fails on many levels. I could go on for days on how HD-DVD is vastly inferior to Blu-Ray, but the issue goes way beyond that. A console is intended to be a constant unit. You cannot retroactively graft, or shall we say, “upgrade” parts at whim. Adding a HD-DVD drive will be completely useless to all gamers, being developers cannot afford to neglect Xbox 360 consoles with equipped DVD9 drives.
It is clear as day that this is only a ploy to bolster the Microsoft-Toshiba HD-DVD Alliance in a half-baked effort to counter the Playstation 3 Blu-Ray juggernaut.
It seems Microsoft still does not understand the console industry, as they are treating the Xbox 360 as if it is PC they can upgrade to cater whatever business strategy of the week corporate concocts. I guess you cannot expect much better from a company who specializes in word processors. In constrast, world-wide consumer electronics leader, Sony, will ship their Playstation 3 with a Blu-Ray drive at launch.
Xbox 360’s Power GROSSLY Overexaggerated
Well, looks like the fake Major is up to his old shenanigans. It seems his claim that the Xenos GPU could perform 80-billion shader operations per second was a complete fabrication, as these exclusive photos prove:
So it is told, the Xenos CPU is only capable of 48-billion shader operations per second. Now, I think it’s time to put it all into perspective:
So, once again, it goes without saying that when you break down the numbers, the Playstation 3 has provably more performance than the Xbox 360 .
